Aluminum was the original name given to the element by Humphry Davy. But this metal is now called aluminium in English-speaking countries outside North America and the name aluminum is used in the rest of the world.
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) adopted aluminium as the standard international name for this element in 1990 but, three years later, recognized aluminum as an acceptable variant.
